Romeo Lavia will miss the rest of the season due to a setback in his recovery from an injury, leaving him with just 32 minutes of play for Chelsea this entire campaign.
53 Million from Last Summer
Chelsea acquired the 20-year-old Lavia for £53 million from Southampton last summer, choosing him over Liverpool, but his time at the club has been marred by injuries.
Ankle Injury
An ankle injury delayed Lavia’s debut for Chelsea until December, when he came on as a substitute in the 58th minute in a win against Crystal Palace.
Unfortunately, during this brief appearance, he sustained a severe thigh injury and hasn’t played since.
Recovery
On Wednesday, Chelsea announced that due to a recent setback in his recovery, the Belgian midfielder would not be able to return for the rest of the season.
Sidelined Players
Lavia is among several Chelsea players sidelined due to injury this season, including Wesley Fofana, Reece James, Christopher Nkunku, Lesly Ugochukwu, Levi Colwill, with Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell recently making a comeback.
Chelsea Announcement
The Chelsea announcement stated, “Midfielder Romeo Lavia will unfortunately miss the remaining 24 season following a setback in his recovery. Recent medical evaluations have confirmed that Lavia, who suffered a major thigh injury in December against Crystal Palace, will not play again this season.”
Additional Attention to Medical Assistance
This situation has brought additional attention to Chelsea’s medical team, which has recently seen the departure of its long-time medical director Dimitrios Kalogiannidis.
Need a medical Practitioner
Chelsea has publicly expressed their intention to hire a new head of performance medicine through a LinkedIn job posting. The role, described as pivotal to the club, seeks a collaborative, committed, and professional medical practitioner to be an effective team member. Responsibilities include injury or illness evaluations.
