UEFA Confirms 26-Man Squads for Euro 2024

Introduction: UEFA is on the verge of officially confirming that teams participating in the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany will be allowed to select squads comprising 26 players.

The decision

This decision follows discussions within UEFA’s national competitions committee. It  is set to be ratified by the executive committee later this week.

23 Man Squad

Initially, UEFA had planned to revert to the traditional 23-man squads after temporarily expanding to 26 players for Euro 2020 . However, due to the success and positive feedback from the expanded squads, the idea gained significant traction among coaches and stakeholders.

Coaches’ Feedback

Many international coaches, including Ronald Koeman of the Netherlands, criticized the decision to reduce squad sizes, describing it as “absurd.” England’s Gareth Southgate, who previously preferred 23-man squads, also voiced his support for the larger squad format.

This shift in perspective was influenced by the numerous injuries plaguing Premier League teams throughout the season.

Impact on National Teams

The decision to maintain 26-man squads comes as a relief to coaches grappling with injury concerns. Scotland’s Steve Clarke, for instance, faced challenges with key players sidelined due to injuries. The expanded squad size provides coaches with greater flexibility and depth. It insured they can adequately cover any absences during the tournament.

Squad Announcement and Preparation

Gareth Southgate is now preparing to announce England’s squad on 21 May, just two days after the conclusion of the Premier League season. With the deadline for squad submissions set for 7 June, Southgate and other managers have ample time to finalize their selections and prepare their teams for the tournament.

Schedule and Expectations

England’s Euro 2024 campaign will commence on 16 June with a highly anticipated match against Serbia. Similarly, Scotland will kick off their tournament journey against hosts Germany on 14 June.

Euro 2024 is here

With expanded squads in place, teams are gearing up for an exciting and competitive tournament. It aims to display their talent and vie for glory on the international stage.
